Bill introduced to block motorcycle-only checkpoints

A federal lawmaker has introduced legislation to prevent the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from giving money to states and local jurisdictions for motorcycle-only checkpoints, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On March 3, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) introduced the bill. The legislation, with original co-sponsors Reps. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) and Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), would prohibit the DOT "from providing grants or any funds to a state, county, town, or township, Indian tribe, municipal or other local government to be used for any program to check helmet usage or create checkpoints for a motorcycle driver or passenger."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is part of the Transportation Department, recently gave Georgia a $70,000 grant to conduct one or more roadside motorcycle-only checkpoints. New York state has operated a similar program using state funds. The AMA has been tracking this disturbing development of motorcycle-only checkpoints since it first appeared in New York several years ago.

  7. This is an example of how our politicians who are supposed to be representing the American people are selling our freedom for a few bucks from the Feds.

  8. hey become an illegal alien and all your rights will be protected but be a tax paying American citizen and your screwed bro! Makes ya proud to vote and vote often …lol

  9. FYI in New York the cops are writing tickets for bootleg DOT stickers and have been known to confiscate the bike for using a vehicle in the commission of a crime. They also are starting to ticket loud pipes. WTF?!!!!!!

  10. The thing is, Gerogia law states that motorcycle riders must wear head protection. But nowhere does it state what standard the head protection has to meet. Or what it has to protect your head from.

  11. All this is is another way to produce revenue, look at all the other states that do not have helmet laws and death tolls are down, if I see a sign that tells motorcycle riders to pull into a check point I will not be pulling in I don't have to take a piss at the moment and they can go fuck them selves the next thing they will want is for all motorcycle to be equipped with seat belts even though at time we need them for the passenger, why should we be singled out for stupid shit, I will be putting a DOT sign on the back of my skid lid and let them show me the guide lines for a DOT approved helmet and where it states the regulation of the approved guide lines for DOT approved helmets. Choices are made by the individual you want to wear a full face helmet,a half shell with all the padding to jump from an airplane be my guest, if you choose not to where a helmet good for you, America the home of the free, BULSHIT. Make your own choice and don't make me abide by it.

  12. The gas prices are robbing us enough! Open your eyes people you all may be riding motorcycles to afford to get to work! Always a money grab! I pay for my plates for vehicle and bike. I pay for insurance for my bike and vehicle. I paid an extra $10.00 for visiting state parks on my license renewal and I pay to get my endorsement! I think I pay plenty!

  13. This is out right stuped. I've been riding for 30 years plus. Just another way for state's to rob the people.

  14. Das Fuhrer doth not think you are smart enough and besides telling you every other thing to keep you safe his majesty desires you be restrained from riding as YOU choose. That crack in our liberties has become a gaping whole and has eroded to dust of a former life.

  15. Why just motorcycles ??? Look at all the other vehicles, strapped bumpers, hanging mirrors, cars needing repairs , hauling unstrapped furniture and hardware or hauling anything not strapped or enclosed… Yes,, Please stop everyone and check that there vehicle or motorcycle or whatever is road ready and not a HAZARD to anyone on the road !!!!!! EVERYONE'S LIFE IS AT DANGER WHEN ON THE ROAD !!

  16. How is it legal to only stop motorcyclists anyway? How about stopping everyone driving a Buick.. oh wait they're only going 20mph anyway..

  17. it is profiling at its worst. if you welcome the check points then they should be checking ALL vehicles for safety violations and not just focus on a certain segment of the population.

  18. I would welcome the check points as long as they included a check for the motorcycle endorsement on the drivers license of the driver. There are so many riders out here that have never bothered to take the motorcycle driving test (or) safety course in order to ride legally. I took my test and I ride with an endorsement and think others should too!…Why not?

  19. I'm a white, middle class, english speaking male, I smoke, I drink once in a while, and I ride a motorcycle…. I can NEVER win
