Season Three Premier of SOA Gets Mixed Bag

You know it’s a slow day when a motorcycle news magazine has to write a review of a television show about a  fictional 1% outlaw biker club just to fill its daily quota of articles, but when it’s a paying gig, you’ve got to perform,  so we’re blogging about SAMCRO.

For those of you who actually go to bike nights on Tuesday and wouldn’t know a DVR from a DVD, and have never tuned in to the FX drama, Sons of Anarchy is based (loosely) on the fictional town of Charming California and the exploits of the (also fictional) outlaw motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy.

The biggest news in the off season was the verbal feud between former self proclaimed fomer leader of the NY Hell’s Angels Chuck Zito (and OZ actor) and SOA Director Kurt Sutter.

Zito filed suit against FX for $5 million dollars claiming they stole his idea for SOA and Sutter basically called him a pussy.  Sutter apparently isn’t too intimidated by Zito’s rep as a former HA member.

This seasons biggest addition is Oscar nominated actor, Hal Holbrook.  TV Guide said,

The octogenarian character actor classes up the third season of FX’s biker drama as Katey Sagal‘s Alzheimer’s-addled dad. His work as a widower is even more heartbreaking when you realize Holbrook recently lost his real-life wife,Designing Women star Dixie Carter.

Deservedly Oscar-nominated for 2007′s Into the Wild, Holbrook could be the one to break SOA‘s Emmy jinx. His presence shifts Sagal — and the show — to a higher gear.

Show Tracker on the Los Angeles Time Blog said,

With its opener, “Sons” is as brutal and Tarantino-esque as ever, but it isn’t gratuitous. Its leather-clad toughs are just becoming more fully formed versions of themselves, especially the women. As much as “Sons” is Hamlet-esque in its theme of father-son relationships, it’s also about daughters.

The writers realized that many of you may have missed season 1 and 2 so they helpfully included some exposition (backstory) to bring the new viewers up to speed. Cameron killed Half-Sack and took my grandson,” fumes SAMCRO’s president, Clay Morrow (Hell Boy’s Ron Perlman),  (and) “[Stahl] lied and framed Gemma. That’s the real truth.” Thanks Clay, that helped save us from surfing over to Wikipedia to catch up on the storyline.

Not all the reviews were positive.

IF magazine said, I just couldn’t get over how outright silly it was. The thing is there are plenty of shows out there that embrace their whimsicalness and even use it to their advantage to create an element of humor (TRUE BLOOD comes to mind). SONS OF ANARCHY is not one of those shows. Gang stand offs, kidnapped children, parents suffering from dementia, drive by shootings, murdered police officers; yeah, this is some heavy stuff.

So that’s it.  A mixed bag of good and bad.  Maybe that’s as it should be. After all, isn’t that what the motorcycle subculture is, the good, the bad and the ugly?    What’s your take on SAMCRO?
